Positron emission tomography (PET) is an imaging technique utilizing
radiolnuclides in the diagnosis and localization of disease. This
technique provides a functional assessment of an abnormality. Newer
PET systems are combined with Computed Tomography (CT). Adding CT to
the PET exam provides rapid attenuation correction and results in a
faster examination time. The high resolution CT images can be fused
with the PET images on a specialized workstation to provide precise
localization.
Utilization of PET/CT is rapidly expanding. Cancer evaluation and
treatment has advanced with the assistance of PET/CT. Medicare
currently covers indications for cervical cancer, colorectal cancer,
thyroid cancer, esophageal cancer, head and neck cancer, breast
cancer, melanoma and lymphoma.
PET/CT is also used to assess cardiac viability.
PET/CT can be very useful in differentiating Alzheimer's from other
forms of dementia.
RANI provides PET/CT services to North Idaho through a relationship
with Alliance Imaging. This enables us to provide the newest PET/CT
technology.
